On the occasion of the World Health Organization’s global initiative for World Health Day, themed ‘Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures,’ BBMRI-ERIC has highlighted the work of the INTEGRATE-LMedC project in its latest multimedia story, emphasising the critical role of large medical cohorts in addressing unmet medical needs, particularly in the case of endometriosis, a long-overlooked but deeply impactful condition.
Endometriosis causes severe pain during periods, intercourse, bowel movements, and urination, along with nausea, fatigue, depression, anxiety, and infertility. This condition affects all areas of life. It often takes years between the first symptoms and a correct diagnosis, leaving women in pain and uncertainty.
WP3 – Large medical Cohorts made significant progress on endometriosis by identifying it as a priority area with unmet medical needs. Through a two-round Delphi study involving 73 experts, endometriosis was highlighted alongside depression and Alzheimer’s disease as a condition that could benefit from large medical cohort data.
This work contributed to the development of Deliverable D3.1, which maps the landscape of large medical cohorts in Europe and aims to guide decision-making and improve research infrastructure, addressing current challenges in cohort data access and utilisation.
